3: Village
history in the Anglo-Saxon / Norman period
As far as your editor is aware there have
been no reported finds within the parish boundaries of any material dating to
either the Anglo-Saxon or Norman periods If any pot sherds or metallic objects
are found that may date from these periods your editor would be delighted to see
and assess them. Please use "Contact
the Council". We know that Saxons lived in the village for there are records
that show Countess Gytha, wife of Ralph, Earl of Hereford and Stori, Frane and
Godric all owned or farmed parts of the parish. Following the Norman Conquest
the Domesday Survey of 1086 tells us that the village land was held by three
Norman lords; Robert, Count of Mortain, Roger de Busli and William Peverel.
These Norman land owners all had tenants farming their lands and the total
number of families living in Stanton was probably about sixteen.
