STANTON ON THE WOLDS ANNUAL PARISH MEETING Will be held on Wednesday the 11th May 2005 at 7:00pm in the Parish Church. Everyone welcome. Coffee and biscuits served at the start. GOOD RESPONSE TO MELTON ROAD SPEED PETITIONA petition in support of a scheme proposed by the Parish Council to get the speed limit on the main A606 road reduced has seen a significant rise in signatures gathered. In our previous edition, ‘Parish News’ made a plea to residents to sign the petition, the presentation of which is to be decided in due course and Parish Council Chairman, Councillor Bryan Baines has been pleased with the response. Steps are required to ease the difficulties off 55 properties, 120 electors and their children alongside Melton Road who face the immense task of the way through the dangers brought about by the speed and numbers of vehicles. It is proposed that the same limit as on the road at Tollerton, currently 40mph, should be implemented on the stretch of the road in Stanton on the Wolds. VOLUNTEER DRIVERS URGENTLY NEEDEDStanton on the Wolds residents are being urged to support a Rushcliffe CVS appeal for more volunteer drivers to help keep their Transport Scheme running. Pam Wakefield, the Transport Co-ordinator for the group, says they are in desperate need of more drivers to help them and they appeal to anyone who can help to come forward. “We try to provide transport for Rushcliffe residents who are unable to use public transport or for whom public transport is not available. Without voluntary drivers we are unable to operate the scheme,” she says. The CVS can be contacted at Park Lodge on Bridgford Road at West Bridgford or by phone on 981 6988 KEYWORTH LEISURE CENTRE OFFERS NEW COURSESTwo new courses are running at Keyworth Leisure Centre. There’s always a shortage of qualified lifeguards at local pools, so Keyworth is running a Royal Lifesaving Society national pool lifeguard qualification course which is necessary in order to become a lifeguard. The course is for participants aged 16 or over and the £165 fee includes all course materials and the exam fee. The course tutor is Mary Foston who has been training local swimmers for over 25 years. A six week Tai Chi course is running from Tuesday 5th April between 1:30 and 2:30pm. This gentle form of moving meditation has been classified as one of the most effective systems of self-defence in China for hundreds of years. Today, it is often used to promote ‘chi’ for health, healing, delaying the effects of ageing and to promote mental harmony. Tai Chi teaches how to move more efficiently and as unnecessary tension is released from muscles, joints and tendons, this leads to better health. The 6-weel course costs £25.20 and pre-booking is essential. Further courses will run in the future. More details from the Centre on 937 5582. STATION FOR THE COMMUNITYNew owners of Wolds Service Station on Melton Road are looking forward to seeing the Service Station providing a local community service. Manager Iain McMillan and staff are hoping to be able to offer a service all residents of the village can use. To achieve that present ownership is putting plans together to improve its facilities including a potential paper delivery service if sufficient interest. Suggestions for future improvements can be made to Mr McMillan on 937 4120. STANTON ON THE WOLDS NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH SCHEMEThe six-monthly meeting of the scheme took place on Monday evening the 24th January. This date is supposed to be “national Depression Day”, but an extremely good spirit prevailed, says Chief Co-ordinator Dr Paul Roebuck. This was particularly encouraging for Dr Roebuck as the main speaker failed to turn up. However with the aid of the Chairman of the Parish Council, Councillor Bryan Baines, the meeting got off to a good start. Bryan outlined the Parish Council’s desire to have speed limits introduced on Melton Road and Browns Lane. To this end petitions were passed around the room for residents on those two roads to sign. A second petition was passed around for residents on Stanton Lane and Keyworth to sign who also made reasonable use of the Browns Lane junction onto Melton Road. The meeting went on to discuss scams, bogus callers and the necessity of ensuring motor car engines were not left running to warm up in a morning whilst the vehicles are left unattended. The main speaker was to have been Inspector Pete Akehurst, our Local Area Commander for Rushcliffe South, who is based at Bingham. We were unable to raise him during the meeting as Bingham Police Station was closed. However the next morning Paul contacted him and received one of the most handsome apologies that he had ever received. Pete Akehurst instantly offered to come to the next meeting, which has been tentatively been agreed to be held on Monday 11th July. (Would residents please note this date in their diaries.) The other encouraging sign that evening was the attendance from Keyworth. Our scheme already extends a short way down Nicker Hill and David Johns regularly brings a contingent from Willowbrook (the south side is in Stanton anyway). But in addition we had Peter Buttery, co-ordinator from Ashley Road, Councillor Bill Donaldson from Dale Road and Sheila Hodges from High View Avenue who are both about to start new schemes. Terence Parker from Green Close came who is about to takeover as co-ordinator there and here were representatives from Brookview Drive too. All in all co-operation on the Neighbourhood Watch front is increasing in Keyworth, a most encouraging sign. As ever we were indebted to the Golf Club for providing us with a free venue. The evening must have been congenial to all as no-one left for at least a quarter of an hour after the meeting closed. VOTING – NO TIME TO REGISTER Elections will be held on the 5th may 2005 to elect Nottinghamshire County Councillors. It’s also possible that a general election will be held on this date. If people are not registered to vote, it is now too late to do so for that date. Anyone who has changed address since the 15th October 2004 must re-register at their new address to enable them to vote. Application forms can be downloaded from www.rushcliffe.gov.uk or contact the Rushcliffe Council on 981 9911. Residents can check if they are registered to vote by calling the same number. RUSHCLIFFE BACKS ‘FAIRTRADE’The Borough Council backed ‘Fairtrade’ fortnight last month with a display in the Civic Centre, a Tradecraft stall and the Mayor Councillor Bryan Tansley signing a pledge committing the council to serve ‘Fairtrade’ refreshments. ‘Fairtrade’ produce gives farmers a fair and stable price for their products, gives smaller farmers a stronger position in world markets, improves their lives and shows greater respect for the environment. At the ‘Fairtrade’ display, visitors to the Civic Centre had the chance of winning one of 100 ‘Fairtrade’ hampers by completing a short survey. For more information see www.fairtrade.org.uk Bits and bobsSpecial thanks have been given by Chairman, Councillor Bryan Baines to the working party that carried out successfully, the erection of the now in place new finger post on Browns Lane. Rushcliffe Borough Council have advised the Parish Council of future changes in Highway maintenance in the region. From April 1st it will be a responsibility of Notts County Council to look after roads and highways in the Rushcliffe area including Stanton on the Wolds. At last after three years of unsuccessful efforts by the Parish Council, NTL have informed of their intention to clean the graffiti on their cabinet on Stanton Lane in the village. Stanton on the Wolds parish clerk, Mike Elliott, has gained his AQA Test Certificate with 12 distinctions, to become a recognised Qualified Clerk. The Clerk of the Council is the first authorised point for contact in respect of the new Freedom of Information Act according to a statement issued by the Home Office. The Chairman is the second point for would-be enquiries.
