LAUNCH DATE FOR HISTORY BOOK – AUGUST 8THSuch has been the progress on work for the village history book being produced for the parish council, the launch date for it has been set much earlier than originally planned. The book will become available at a launch ceremony at the Golf Club on Tuesday August 8th, whereas initially it was thought the event may not be able to take place until December. Invitations o the launch are currently being delivered and each household in the village will be given a free copy of the 112 page publication. Other copies will be available for purchase at £5. Local residents Alan and Val Hunt have worked as compilers and editors for the book. Included in the contents of the book are items on history of the parish church as well as the village itself. CASH SUPPORT: Local Notts Count Council member Coun. John Cottee has come forward with a £1000 cheque from his authority to help towards the cost of the publication. On the night of the launch Mr Hunt will be mounting a display of local fossils at the Golf Club as an added attraction to the visitors. Those from the village unable to attend will receive a copy of the book and it will be delivered to them during August. Coun. Dennis Hackett chairman of the parish council says they are looking forward to a successful social event for the launch and are grateful to the Golf Club for making their premises available for it. HEAVY GOODS VEHICLE CHECK REQUIREDA decision by Notts County Council to carry out a Heavy Goods Vehicles Assessment check on Browns Lane at Stanton has puzzled the parish council. The check, a manual one involving an officer sitting at the side of the lane to count the vehicles going past, has the aim of checking if there should be consideration to imposing a Weight Limit on the Lane. But parish councillors say they are not aware of any major problem caused by lorries travelling along the Lane as a shortcut anywhere. Any limit that was imposed would not prevent vehicles using the lane if they had deliveries to do on it. STILL GOING AFTER NEARLY 300 YEARSOn August 12th 1718 the Rev Thomas Ousley, the Minister at Stanton on the Wolds Parish Church, died. And in his will he left in trust a cottage, premises and land in the parish of Gedling, income from which was to be annually distributed to the needy poor inhabitants of Stanton. In 1882 the cottage was sold for £1350 and at that time brought in £40 from interest for annual distribution. The Trustees invested the money in the National Debt Fund and that remained the position until 1972 when it was moved to Treasury Stock. Four Trustees: The Charity Commission have confirmed that the trustees for the charity are appointed by the parish council and they have the authority to name four people. Currently they are Mr Elwyn Bradshaw, Mr John Stockbridge, Coun. Mrs Margaret Healy and Coun. Jim Goodman. The role of the trustees includes the need to provide a financial statement to the Annual Parish Meeting. PUBLIC INVITED TO PLAY A PARTThe parish council are anxious to encourage participation by the public in their meetings and include an item on every agenda which gives the opportunity to make comments. Clerk, Mike Elliott, says that more and more councils now make regular provision for residents to take part in the meetings and at Stanton they are pleased to echo this effort to increase interest in their work. The Borough Council have yet to take a decision on this application. Bits and bobsPhotographs taken by Coun. Roy Butler of the poor state of sections of the footpath at the side of Melton Road have been forwarded by the parish council to the Notts County Council after they said they couldn’t find any problems with the area. Rushcliffe Borough Council are to instigate a scheme to refurbish the land at the corner of Stanton Lane and Browns Lane and on which the village sign stands. The work will be done in 2006/2007 year. The Thurlby Lane road sign is missing and the parish council have asked the Highway Authority to have it replaced. The council are also asking for the sign on Browns Lane that has been damaged to be repaired. The Stanton Flowersby Alan & Val HuntThe earliest record we have of this old Stanton family dates from the 1st October 1610 when William Flower married Ellen Holmes at Melton Mowbray and they came to live in the village. There is a record of a Hellene Flower, (almost certainly the same lady), wife of a William Flower, being interred at All Saints in November 1638. There is no record of their children as the earliest known parish register for All Saints only begins in 1735 and even the Bishop’s Transcripts, which take the records back to 1627, contain gaps. The very first marriage noted in the Bishop’s Transcripts is that between a Richard Flower and Jane Norfolk conducted by the Reverend David Chouän in the church on the 2nd April 1627, (Richard may have been a son of William and Ellen). This marriage produced at least three children. The first was a girl called Ann was baptised on the 30th March 1627 and there is a record of her death in 1709. Thomas was baptised on the 16th September 1630 and we know that at a later date he married an Anne. The marriage produced at least one daughter as Ann Flower was baptised on the 21st March 1663. Thomas the head of the household is listed in the Hearth Tax returns of both 1664 and 1674. The 1664 listing shows that he escaped the tax along with seven other villagers but was charged two shillings for a single hearth in 1674. Thomas acted as church warden for various years between 1664 and 1688. The records show that Thomas died and was interred in May 1694. The third child and youngest son was John who was baptised on the 20th December 1633. There is a considerable gap in the known church records between the years 1640 and 1663 so we just do not know whether there were any further children of Richard and Jane or Thomas and Anne. The next record shows an Elizabeth Flower marrying Humphrey Clark on the 2nd November 1680 but we are not told who Elizabeth’s parents were. In September 1711 John Flower married an Ann ‘x’, (John was a farmer) and this marriage produced six children. Ann and John were both baptised on the same day the 20th December 1711, John died 11 days later. The third child Elizabeth was baptised on the 10th September 1713 but she died in April 1742. On the 29th January 1716 Mary was baptised and it is known that she married Richard Brown of Nether Broughton in 1730. Observant readers will have noticed that providing Mary was baptised soon after birth, then she was aged 14 when married. Up to 1929 it was legal for a girl to marry at the age of twelve provided she had her parents permission. William was the fifth, being baptised in April 1716 however he died on the second of November 1731 aged just 15 years. His short life is commemorated by a small brass plate behind the south door in All Saints Church. Sarah was the sixth and last child and was baptised on the 12th September 1721. She had a son William as a single woman in 1741 and married Richard Morley of Costock on the 17th July 1745. There is an interesting record showing that a Henry Pickard of Keyworth was indicted 29th April 1728 at Nottingham for assaulting John Flower and also for cutting down ash trees in Lady Catherine Parson’s plantation at Stanton on the Wolds. John Flower also acted as church warden for All Saints in 1736/1737. The transcripts show a record of a William Flower, labourer, being interred in August 1719 but we have no dates for William’s birth or marriage due to the 22 missing years in the transcript records. By 1771 when there was a listing of all Stanton residents to raise a levy of 6d in the pound for highway repairs, the Flowers of Stanton seem to have faded away. Although John and Ann Flower, who were the last Stanton family of Flowers, had two sons, both boys died early. Of the daughters, Ann died as an infant and Mary and Sarah married and moved away from the village. The last girl, Elizabeth, died in her late twenties but there are no further details about her in the records.
