Parish Meeting Offers Public chance for
their say
The Annual Parish Meeting for Stanton on
the Wolds is to be held on Wednesday 21st April at the Willowbrook
School. It will start at 7:30pm and all parishioners are invited to attend. The
meeting offers residents the opportunity to make comment on any aspect of parish
life. The meeting will be chaired by Councillor Bryan Baines, Chairman of the
Parish Council and he will be presenting the annual report of the council to it.
There will be a guest speaker at the
meeting with Mr John Tarrant, chairman of the Rushcliffe Primary Care Trust,
attending to give a presentation explaining the background of their organisation
and the functioning of primary care trusts and how they relate to secondary and
tertiary levels of health care. Mr Tarrant will be the first on the agenda and
his talk is expected to last 20 minutes, he will then take questions.
SOCIAL TIME AHEAD FOR STANTON
It’s all go for Stanton’s
summer social event following a successful public meeting aimed at finding
people willing to help organise it. The event – under the title ‘Stanton on
the Wolds Summer Fayre’- will take place on Saturday 12th June in
the Church field adjoining the parish church of All Saints on Browns Lane.
It will be timed to start at
3pm and last for four hours. The 2004 event follows the success of the
Millennium and the Queen’s Golden Jubilee events held in the village and the
formation of a working group to organise it.
The events held to mark the
arrival of the new Millennium and the 50 years reign of Her Majesty were both
hugely successful and many of the people attending them asked for a repeat as
soon as possible. Secretary of the organising group is Margaret Healy and she
says they are appealing for residents to put the date in their diary.
Tickets for ‘The Fayre’ will be
available shortly and door to door visits will be made to give everyone the
chance to purchase them. Says Margaret: “We look forward to seeing you at
another happy Stanton get-together.” The secretary can be contacted on 914 8654.
BUS MAN ALAN IS ALERT
The Parish Council is aware of the needs of some residents in the
parish in regard to the local bus service and relies on Councillor Alan Jackson
for much of its information.
Councillor Jackson makes regular contact with the bus companies
and Notts County Council and keeps the council up to date with any proposed
changes to the service. Coun Jackson joined the council as a member last year
and passes on any important information on the service through the good offices
of the pages of the local church magazine, the notice boards and now in this
newsletter.
Going to Church…..?
Services at Stanton All Saints Parish
Church are at 10am on the first Sunday of the month, 6pm on the second and
fourth and 9:30am on the third.
CAR PARK LAND SWAP FOR HEALTH CENTRE SITE
Although no
agreement has yet been reached, Rushcliffe Borough Council and Rushcliffe
Primary Care Trust are looking to swap land they each own in Keyworth to allow
the building of a new Health Centre in the village.
The Keyworth proposal is the first in
Rushcliffe under a scheme in which a number of primary health care facilities in
the Borough would be replaced or upgraded as part of a major conurbation wide
initiative which involves a long term public private partnership. The existing
health centre at Keyworth is acknowledged as being in very poor condition and is
not large enough for the needs it has to meet.
OVERBEARING: The Rushcliffe
PCT have already attempted to design a new health centre that would occupy the
same area of land as the existing building, but say due to the slope on the site
a higher building would be overbearing for the houses at the rear. The
alternative solution is that the new health centre be built on part of the
Borough’s car park adjacent to the existing health centre which itself could be
demolished and provide a facility for extending what was left of the Borough’s
car park.
In principle a straightforward land swap
could be undertaken but Mr Paul Randall, deputy Chief Executive of the Borough
Council says it has been made clear that any proposal that involves a financial
loss or additional costs for the council would not be acceptable. Discussions
have taken place on the question of public conveniences within the new health
centre and that has been agreed in principle, a move which allows the existing
toilets to be closed.
The Borough’s waste recycling site for
Keyworth is on their existing car park and the council say one of the
stipulations for agreement would be that satisfactory arrangements are agreed
for a continuation of that service.
COUNCIL SEEKING QUALITY TAG
Stanton on the Wolds Parish Council is to
seek a ‘Quality Council Status’ tag. The decision was unanimously agreed
at the March meeting when Chairman, Councillor Bryan Baines said he felt it
would add to the standing of the council in its dealings with other authorities
and also ensure an improved service to its parishioners.
The Rural White Paper ‘Our
Countryside: The Future – a fair deal for Rural England’ published in
the year 2000, set out a number of measures to give local people the opportunity
to become more involved in the development of their communities.
The Government said they believe that
parish councils, as a tier of government that is closest to local communities,
have a central role to play in improving local quality of life. The White Paper
made a number of proposals on improving rural life, one being the introduction
of the new concept of a ‘Quality’ parish council. Such a status will equip a
parish council to take on a stronger role in their community and is aimed at
being achievable by a parish council of any size, location or whatever its
current activities are. Currently the council clerk, Mike Elliott, is undergoing
the necessary training to enable him to take the AQA test and his success in
that is necessary for the council to be able to seek its intended status.

Newstead. He will report back to members on whether or not it could be useful if
the parish sought to have a Village Design Statement.
The Annual Meeting of the Parish Council
has been arranged for Tuesday 11th May. At that meeting the council
has by law to appoint a chairman for the following 12 months.
