 SPEED LIMIT COMING-SLOWLY

Plans for a 40mph speed limit restriction on a section of the A606 road at Stanton on the Wolds will happen- although there is still no promise for a firm date for it to be implemented.

The Parish Council have been advised by Notts County Council that the scheme- which also includes a 30mph limit on part of Browns Lane- had drawn objections and these are now being considered.

In addition to the main scheme which was published in January, the County Council will also be implementing a separate scheme involving the provision of two central traffic islands, one at the start of the northern limit of the speed limit and one near the junction with Browns Lane. There will also be improved signage and road markings.

The 40mph restriction on the A606 road will be from the property "The Poplars" to near the village name sign to the south.

On Browns Lane the 30mph order will be from its junction with the A606 to the boundary of number 136.

        NOTICE BOARDS FOR YOU !

The Parish Council has three notice boards for use in the village, and advantage can be taken of these by anyone for items of local interest provided they are non commercial. Keys for the boards are held by the Clerk and Couns. Margaret Healy, Dennis Hackett and Bryan Baines.

CUT THOSE HEDGES AND TREES BACK

Hedges and trees overhanging footpaths must have a 2.5m clearance and residents are asked to ensure any such growth from their property does not violate these rules. And there is also a plea for owners not to park their vehicles on grass verges in the village or indeed on pavements either.

SPEEDY RUSHCLIFFE SERVICE

Parish Council chairman Mrs Margaret Healy has congratulated Rushcliffe Borough Council for a speedy response by the 'Streetwise Service' to deal with straw and mud on the roads - dealing with the problem within hours of them being reported.

LOOKING FOR A STOCKING FILLER ? ANSWER: HISTORY BOOK

Stanton on the Wolds new history book published by the Parish Council in July last year is still available. The 108 page book compiled and edited by village residents Alan & Val Hunt with many photographs will make an ideal Christmas stocking filler. Over 200 have been sold. Copies are available through any member of the Council or the Clerk at his office at 19/21 Main Street, Keyworth (opposite the Post Office) at a price of £5 each.

KEEP THOSE FOOTPATHS CLEAR - PLEASE

A number of complaints have been received by the Parish Council in regard to footpaths in the parish not being easily accessible or useable

Responsibility to ensure public footpaths are passable rests with landowners and the Council ask all those responsible to ensure routes over their land are in good order.

LAND ARMY GIRLS TRACED

Two of the Land Army girls featured in the new Stanton history book have recently been traced and it is hoped they will shortly be contacted by editors Alan & Val Hunt.

The ladies are shown on page 65 of the book working as Land Girls in the Womens' Land Army at Glebe Farm on Browns Lane.

Says Mr Hunt: "We are hoping to be able to talk to them soon, with a view to writing up some of their reminiscences of their stay in the village in WWII."

Field walking around Stanton

by Alan Hunt

Archaeological material that may be picked up by field walkers falls into five broad categories; flints, fire-cracked pebbles, pottery sherds, brick and tile, and metal objects. It has been estimated that the surface of a ploughed field constitutes approximately 1% of the entire depth of actual plough soil. By walking a field transect and visually scanning an area of one metre to both the left and right and repeating this exercise across the entire field taking transects every ten metres, one may expect to retrieve 0.2% of artefacts present. Thus to get a reasonably representative collection of the artefacts likely to be present, the field walking may need to be repeated for 5 years or more and even then those artefacts present at low concentrations may not be seen. Last autumn and winter when some of the local fields were bare, a first attempt at local field walking was made. This resulted in the retrieval of one Palaeolithic, two Roman and three Mediaeval artefacts.

The Palaeolithic find was a flint core. These cores are produced from large flint pebbles which are struck with an antler or another stone to produce flat striking platforms at both the top and bottom ends of the pebble. The striking platform is then repeatedly hit to produce thin flakes, which may be further chipped to form arrow heads, scrapers and other stone tools. It is a long core of opaque white, cream and yellow flint with evidence of flakes having been struck off on at least 2 sides. It is not possible to age flint cores but this core could date back to 8,000BC.

The Roman finds consisted of two pottery sherds. The first was a base sherd of a wheel-made pot made from reduced fired pale grey fabric with a cream slip on the exterior, whilst the second was a rim sherd of coarse grey fabric. The rim seems to have a decorative, incised double line around the exterior. While both sherds are definitely Roman their age could not be determined except to say that they were produced between 43 to 410 AD.

The Medieval artefacts were all pottery sherds. The first was a body sherd of Midlands Purple Ware. A thin, coarse, reduced fired grey-purple fabric known to be produced between 1200-1499 AD. The second sherd was a body sherd of a coarse thick grey ware with yellow-green glaze on the exterior spotted irregularly with red-black glaze. The exterior has a curvilinear ridge across the sherd, possibly indicating the shoulder of the vessel, dating between 1300 to 1499 AD. The third sherd was a base sherd of a coarse orange sandy ware with the remains of a thick dark green glaze on the exterior, identified as Nottingham Green Glaze Ware and dating between 1300-1499 AD.

The first three months of the Stanton Parish Council web site

Every computer using broadband has a unique identifier that leaves an invisible electronic tag behind on the server after each visit to a web site. These may be traced and identified during criminal investigations for instance. For computers that still operate using dial-up, a numerical identifier is assigned each time a connection is made, however the actual identifier changes with each dial-up. These electronic tags, (cookies), are collected by the servers that host the web sites and can provide useful information for owners of commercial web sites. As the SoWPC web site is non-profit making, there is no relevant information useful for marketing purposes however it is interesting to see a breakdown of visits (hits) to the site.

Statistics are collected on an hourly, daily, weekly and monthly basis. At the launch of the web site for the weeks beginning 22nd, 28th of April and the 6th, 13th, and 20th of May for instance the number of hits was 796, 1112, 1080, 1061, 748. The four weeks of June showed a continual rise in usage with nearly 2000 hits for the week beginning the 17th June. A true world wide web: nearly all the hits originated from the UK however there were 103 from Australia, 88 from the USA, 48 from Canada, 41 from France, 30 from Denmark, 25 from Argentina, 17 from New Zealand, 11 from Malaysia and Norway, and low numbers from Ivory Coast, Israel, Brazil, Finland, Thailand, Germany, Belgium, Holland, Switzerland, Romania, Russia, India, South Africa and Costa Rica.

From the first 15,789 hits, the breakdown shows 4923 numeric identifiers, 1578 from NTL users, 1325 btcentralplus.com., 851 from Google, 758 from live.com, 632 yahoo users, 523 aol users, 403 from virgin.net users, 343 pol.co.uk, 287 from btopenworld, 193 sky users, 138 from demon.net users, 135 from demon co.uk., 101 from tesco, 36 from wanadoo users, plus 105 other servers. The statistics also show the number of hits on each page of the web site thus giving useful information as to which parts of the site are proving the most interesting and/or useful. Thus the future content can be slanted towards the more popular content.

BITS & BOBS

Apologies to Mrs Pearl Grice who was the female Chairman of the Parish Council in the 1970s. Current lady chairman Mrs Margaret Healy is happy to set the record straight that she is not the first lady to hold the position. In 1977, to commemorate the Queen's Silver Jubilee, the retiring chairman of the Parish Council, Councillor Roy Butler, presented a silver medal of office to the Parish Council. The medal was created from a silver watch donated by Mr & Mrs Grice.

Celebrating his 25th year of leading Keyworth Choir, Colin Russell will be on duty for their Christmas Concert on December 8th.

A total of £4,130 was raised this year in Stanton, Plumtree and Keyworth for Christian Aid Week.

Notts Police Band is presenting a "Music from Films and Shows Night" at the BGS Centre at Keyworth on Saturday October 20th, organised by Keyworth Rotary and Inner Wheel Clubs.

Mxymatosis is back among the rabbit population and owners should go to the link http://www.rabbitwelfare.co.uk/news.html for information. Rabbit keepers should take their rabbits to the vet immediately for a vaccination.

Rushcliffe Borough Council customer service department staff the Police Contact Point in Keyworth Square each Friday from 9am to 1pm.

Harvest Festival service for Stanton on the Wolds Parish Church will take place on Sunday September 23rd . It will start at 6pm.
