FOOTPATH IMPROVEMENT CAMPAIGNParish Council seeks County ActionEfforts are being made by the parish council at Stanton on the Wolds to encourage Notts County Council to carry out improvements to road side footpaths in the parish. The parish have asked the County to look to carry out improvements to the roadside footpath along a section of Melton Road and also on Stanton Lane from Browns Lane corner. And on the same subject the parish have raised no objections to a proposed diversion of Public Footpaths numbers 5 and 6, the move making it possible for the present route across part of the golf course no longer needed. The council are looking at holding some of their meetings in the parish church and have asked the Church Council for their comments. Complaints were received by the council on a noise nuisance during weekend nights caused by dumping of material on a site on Browns Lane. The council are in contact with Rushcliffe Borough Council on the matter. The material was being taken to the site from the A453 road near Clifton, the road working taking place during the night to help avoid congestion on this busy road. The council agreed to support a request from a local resident for hedge planting under the Rushcliffe Borough scheme in providing saplings and hedging. Members are to ask Notts County Council to undertake a survey of trees on Browns Lane to check on their condition. Some concern has been expressed that there could be a danger problem from some of the trees because of a deteriorating condition of them. Rushcliffe Borough Council are to be asked to consider including an environmental scheme to improve the area around the existing public seat near the Melton Road garage. PROPOSED SPEEDWATCH PROJECT IS WELCOMEDA project aimed at tackling speeding traffic in the area is being planned by local Notts County Councillor John Cottee and Richard Butler. Councillor Cottee from Keyworth says from attending meetings with parish councillors and other constituents, he realises that most villages suffer from speeding traffic and would like to see action taken to resolve the problem. A scheme started in North Notts could well follow in the southern part of the county if the two councillors get their way. The scheme would be managed from the local police station or contact point and would involve local volunteers conducting the checks, having received training from the police to use the speed check units. If the scheme gets the go support from the County, a meeting will be called for all parish councils and any interested residents so that it can be explained in detail. HEDGES CUT BACK CALL The parish council have received a number of complaints concerning overgrown hedges in the village and have appealed to owners to keep them in order and to regularly trim them. It is an offence to obstruct the footway and in extreme cases Notts County Council can be called in by the parish council to carry out the work and to charge the owner of the hedge with the cost of it. ARTISTS ON SHOWAn art exhibition is being planned for the village hall at Keyworth on Saturday October 2nd. Organisers are the Keyworth and District Twinning Association and local artists will be welcome to exhibit and sell their work at it. BACK IN THE FOLDFormer member of the parish council Mr Alex McKee has returned as a co-opted member. Mr McKee of Thurlby Farm, Thurlby Lane, Stanton was previously a member but had to leave while he moved abroad to work. He has now returned as a co-opted member to replace Mr Ken Kirk who retired. MORE SAY NEEDED ON PLANNING APPLICATIONS SAYS THE PARISHRushcliffe Borough Council are being urged by the parish council at Stanton to allow a representative from parish and town councils to attend meetings of their Development Committee and put over local views on contentious applications. Recently Notts County Council opened up their planning meetings to allow the public to put over views and the parish council feel the Borough should now adopt the same pattern. The question of vehicles parking on pavements in the parish – and particularly along Melton Road- was raised and it was agreed by members to tell the Highways Authority of the problem and the police. The Health Centre at Keyworth will be on the agenda for the next meeting of the parish council, as will community transport and traffic speeds on the A606 road. MEETINGS ON A REGULAR DAY The parish council has agreed that meetings throughout 2004 should where possible be held on the same night, on the second Wednesday of every other month. But the meeting for November is on a Thursday – the fourth of the month. DEATH OF Mrs JOYCE DIXONWell known local resident Mrs Joyce Dixon has died. She was a former Mayor of Rushcliffe and a long serving parish councillor at Keyworth. Born in Barton in Fabis, Mrs Dixon liver in the South Notts area all her life except for a period of 12 years moving there soon after her marriage. She was a Governor of the South Wolds School for 23 years and at one time was chairman of three primary schools in Keyworth. She was a JP for 16 years, serving on the Bingham bench. Mrs Dixon was the first female member of Keyworth Parish Council and its first lady chairman. She was elected to Rushcliffe Borough Council in 1973, twelve years after she became a parish councillor.
WEEKLY REFUSE BIN COLLECTION WOULD BE TOO COSTLY A call for litter bins in the village to be collected weekly instead of fortnightly would be too expensive to carry out Councillor Roy Butler has told the parish council. The parish council was told at its meeting in September that there was some concern from residents in the parish that the current fortnightly collection of household refuse alternating with the ‘green’ bin collection as not meeting the needs of many families. Councillor Roy Butler, a member of both the parish council and Rushcliffe Borough Council, says that for the Borough to introduce a weekly collection of the ‘grey’ bin would bring about a massive increase in costs and is not something than is likely to be contemplated by them. Councillor Alan Jackson said some residents had approached him and had raised concerns because of the fear of refuse ‘smelling’ by being in their bins for two weeks. Bits and bobsThe parish council have agreed to spend £130 on a new finger directional post pointing from Browns Lane to the parish church. The council are paying for the sign and the church for the wording. The original post was removed because it was considered to be a danger. New borrowers are being sought in Stanton by the WRVS books service. The scheme’s local contact is Mrs Ferrer on Stanton Lane who can be contacted on 937 2838 Keyworth South Wolds School was oversubscribed for year 7 for this September. Anyone due to join in September next year is being advised to get their applications in quickly. A profit of £220 was made on the village social event held earlier this year. The money has been shared between the parish church and the parish council with a request to the latter it be spent on a project to enhance the village in some way. Keyworth and Stanton Over 60’s Club meets every Thursday afternoon in the village hall in Keyworth. The meeting starts at 2pm and lasts two hours. Admission is 50p including tea and biscuits. A bingo session is held on the first Thursday of the month. More details on the club from 937 4137. Rushcliffe Community Partnership group have announced a new series of meetings to which the public are invited. The first one is being held at Keyworth Village Hall on Wednesday October 13th with a 6:30pm start. JUST IN CASE: Councillor Bryan Baines, chairman of the parish, has agreed his name can go forward again as the Notts County Council Snow Warden for the village. PUBLIC CAN PLAY A PART The Parish Council welcome an input in their work from local residents and have introduced a new regular item on the agenda of all its meetings giving any visitors the opportunity to take part and discuss items with members and put their points of view on local matters.
