NEW PLEA FOR MELTON ROAD SPEED PETITION SUPPORTResidents urged to sign up to save lives. A plea is being made for more residents in Stanton on the Wolds to support efforts to get the speed limit on the main A606 road reduced. A petition is currently being organised through the parish council and while a good number of residents have supported it, there is need for more names to be put on it before it can be sent in to Notts County Council, our local County Council member Coun. John Cottee and Rushcliffe MP Kenneth Clarke. Parish council Chairman Coun. Bryan Baines says he would like to see every household in the parish support the petition. The A606 road has become significantly more dangerous in recent years as the speed of drivers passing along it increases and the amount of traffic on it grows almost daily. There are 55 properties, 120 electors and their children, alongside Melton Road and they face the immense difficulties every day of the way through the dangers brought about by the speed and numbers of vehicles. The same road at Tollerton has a 40mph limit and the parish council at Stanton say this should apply in its parish as well. The parish council is also urging the County Council to look at the provision of a speed limit on Browns Lane. Petition forms are available from Coun. Baines at 120 Melton Road, Coun. Alan Jackson at 31 Melton Road, Coun. Mrs Margaret Healy at 1 Stanton Mews, Browns Lane, Coun. Alex McKee at Thurlby Lane and at Wolds Service Station. CHAIRMAN TO STAND DOWNStanton on the Wolds Parish Council chairman Councillor Bryan Baines is to stand down from office at this year’s annual meeting, but he will retain his seat on the council as an ordinary member. Coun. Baines says that pressure of other work has forced him into his decision. BOROUGH COUNCIL ABOLISH PARISH RATE GRANT SYSTEM Rushcliffe Borough Council have confirmed their decision to abolish the parish rate grant system. The move means that the expenditure of all parish councils and town councils in the Borough will from April 1st this year be found from council tax payers in the individual parishes. A call has been made on them to clearly explain the changed system when council tax papers go out, particularly because they will seem to show all parishes having increased their council tax requirement because of the loss of the 55% grant previously offered by the Borough. Meanwhile the parish council at Stanton have agreed not to impose a parish council tax increase for 2005/2006 and will again be asking for £4410, the same as in the last current financial year. BUS SHELTER PLEA IS REJECTED BY COUNTY COUNCILA request by the parish council for bus shelters to be provided in Stanton on the Wolds along the A606 has been rejected by Notts County Council, The demand was made to the County Highways as a result of the fact there are no such shelters in our village along the route in question and it was felt a provision on the Nottingham bound side of the road was required to serve the needs of parishioners. Following a site survey aimed at observing a number of criteria to satisfy the Highways Office such as usage, degree of exposure etc. in order to determine priority for installation. The council was informed that both sites, near the Browns Lane junction adjacent to the garage and opposite 31 Melton Road were deemed unsuitable by the Highways Office. In a letter to the parish council Karen Emery, Technical Officer on Passenger Transport said; “Neither of these sites are marked as official bus stops. I have spoken with the major bus operator along this route and they have indicated that patronage is low. They pick up most passengers in the vicinity of the petrol station as and when flagged down at a point where it is safe to stop at the time.” It was explained that the request has also been turned down on safety grounds for the official signing of them as bus stops let alone installing shelters. MOBILE PHONE PLEA TO HELP CHARITIESA plea is being made to Stanton on the Wolds residents to donate old mobile phones for recycling for a charity. Some of the UK’s leading charities have teamed up with specialist recycling company ‘The Recycling Appeal’ to run eco-friendly fund-raising appeals, meaning every mobile phone you donate can generate vital funds for your chosen cause. The phones are refurbished and resold, with a substantial proportion of the proceeds going to charitable organisations. All that is required is to choose which charity to donate to;- Marie Curie Cancer Care, The Roy Castle Lung cancer Foundation, the Royal National Institute of the Blind, The Children’s Hospice Association Scotland or the Northern Ireland Hospice Care. Jamie Rae, chief executive of Eurosource said; “When people receive fancy new mobiles, their old phones are often forgotten about. These phones join the UK’s estimated 75 million redundant mobiles – enough phones to stretch from London to Lapland more than three times! If you get a new mobile this year, choose a charity and give it a fantastic present – your old mobile.” There is another product which can also be recycled for money – empty printer cartridges. These too can raise much-needed cash and if anyone in our village has them at home or at work then it is a great potential to boost charity funds. Residents of Stanton who have a mobile phone or a printer cartridge to donate simply call 08712 505050 or visit www.recyclingappeal.com and state which of the five charities you would like to support and ask for a freepost envelope. Then all you have to do is pop it in the post. Further details and information can be obtained by calling 08712 505050 or by visiting their web site. As a company with a five year history ‘The Recycling Appeal’ has an annual turnover of £3m and employs 100 staff in the UK, Ireland, France and Spain. The company has won ‘Best Inspirational Business for CSR 2004’ through SBC, ‘Best International Business in the Forth Valley 2004’ and ‘Best Performing Business in Scotland 2003’ through Scottish Enterprise. The company has recycled almost 2 million kgs of mobile phone and printer cartridges since 1999. It is estimated that in the next four years Europe could recycle 50,000 tons of mobile phones, the same weight as the Forth Rail Bridge. In terms of printer cartridge recycling it is believed that printer ink costs more than vintage champagne; manufacturers charge consumers around £1.70 per millilitre of printer ink compared to just 23p per millilitre for Dom Perignon 1985. However, if a remanufactured printer cartridge is purchased people pay as little as 10% of the printer ink price. It is also proved that an inkjet cartridge takes hundreds of years to bio-degrade and it takes 1.5 pints of oil to make anew one. Why not become involved and bolster further positive feedback and more importantly save the small environment of our village? TREE SEMINAR A BIG HITTwo parish councillors have signed up to be Tree Wardens for Stanton on the Wolds following their visit to a seminar organised by ‘React 32’, a tree warden network part of the Tree Council’s UK-wide tree warden scheme. Councillor Alan Jackson and Councillor Mrs Margaret Healy were influenced by the information served to them at a training seminar held by the Rushcliffe-established organisation aimed at spreading the role of the community in safeguarding their trees. Both Councillor Jackson and Councillor Mrs Healy expressed their satisfaction of the fact they were present and found it worth while. A variety of tips on how to be of use to the local tree environment was made to attendees by John Stokes, main contributor on stories on trees to ‘The Archers’, from the National Tree Council. Suggestions on how parish councils and tree wardens could preserve local trees and woodland included the collection of information about the condition of trees and note those of special interest and awareness of Protection Orders, particularly in conjunction with Planning Applications. Advice has been given to Tree Wardens to become knowledgeable of any possible grants and to further raise the interest by organising walks and events. Both councillors have expressed their intention of attending future training sessions on various topics, Subjects will include a discussion on ‘Trees and the Law’, ‘Woodlands’ and the ‘Identification and survey skills’. The scheme is also open to members of the public who are passionate about trees to play an active role in enhancing and conserving their trees and woods. MEETINGS ON A REGULAR DAY The parish council has agreed that meetings throughout 2005 should where possible be held on the same night, on the second Wednesday of every other month. Bits and bobsAn oak finger post pointing to the parish church on Browns Lane has been purchased and is now erected. The ‘Riding for the Disabled Association Group’ at Lings Lane, Keyworth is in desperate need of more helpers. Volunteers would be asked to give just two hours of their time to help on a Thursday morning. Contact Carole on 01509 880092 or Gwyneth on 0115 937 2272.
