Census returns for the Parish of Stanton on the Wolds Prior to 1800 there had been various efforts to organise a complete nationwide census of the population and all efforts had failed. There had been some success however, as a number of towns did actually carry out a local census, the results in a number of cases still exist. The first true nationwide census was performed in 1801 but although the population was counted, peoples names were not recorded. This was repeated for the 1811, 1821 and 1831 censuses. The returns for these first four censuses were not kept and that information has been lost. In 1841 the first full census was taken where every persons name was recorded together with their relationship to the head of the family and whether they were married or single. The age of the person was also requested, although this is not strictly accurate as figures were rounded up or down. People also had to give their rank, profession or occupation. By the time of the 1851 census an additional column on the form requested the place of birth. The census returns have been copied from microfiche records at the Nottingham Archives and are here reproduced by kind permission of Mark Dorrington, Principal Archivist, Nottinghamshire Archives and are the copyright of The National Archives, Kew. Please note that the names of the inhabitants may have been written in by the enumerator with a variant spelling of the name and similarly, may have been inadvertently mis-interpreted by your editor. If the name you were expecting to find does not occur, please check for the same surname with a variant spelling ie: Smith/Smyth/Smithe/Smythe. To make searching the list of inhabitants easier, each Census has a separate Index to the surnames included. If the correct surname is found, then please go to the full Census transcription to see all the details. Alternatively go to the Census directly.
