The earliest known map of Stanton dated 1763 When Sir Mark Parsons inherited the Manor of Stanton on the Wolds at the death of his father, Sir William Parsons in 1760, he commissioned a survey of his estates in Stanton to be carried out by Charles Wilkinson, a Nottingham Surveyor. The resultant book of maps and lists of tenants, their holdings and the rents, dated 1763 has survived and may be consulted in the Nottingham Archives on Castle Meadow Road, Nottingham under document number DD 2182/1 (you will need to register for a readers ticket). The field boundaries for the holding of each tenant were checked against and traced over a 20 inch to the mile copy of the first O S Map of 1891 in the hope that some of the field boundaries had remained the same. Most field boundaries had fortunately remained the same but where hedges and field boundaries had been erased, or altered, a line of 'best fit' was drawn enabling the production of one composite map. The outline map below shows the position of the lands held by the Parsons Estate, which occupied approximately two thirds of the parish. The parish boundaries are shown by the red dots.
The colour-coded map below attempts to show the position of the various fields within the Estate in 1763. Most of the fields shown are still in existence today. It gives the first detailed breakdown of land holdings in the village, and provides a valuable list of the names of the individual fields in the Parsons estate.
The following mini tables, A to N, give the tenants, their holdings, the rateable value per holding and the total monies due to the Parsons estate as surveyed in 1763 and have been transcribed from the original book of maps by kind permission of Mark Dorrington, Principal Archivist at the Nottinghamshire Archives.
