The Parish Registers

The oldest known register from the parish church of All Saints is a parchment book made up of 13 leaves within heavier parchment covers. The first entry is dated 2nd October 1736. Entries are lacking detail containing only the names of the people concerned, the date and the type of event; ie baptism, marriage or interment. All subsequent registers conform to Rose's Act and thus for baptisms contain the names of the parent(s), father's occupation and the name of the Minister. For marriages we can see both the age and occupation of the bride and groom, their father's name and occupation, names of the witnesses, the Minister and whether the marriage was by reading the Banns or by special Bishop's License. For interments the additional information can include the family relationship of the deceased, the age and thus the date of birth may be calculated and the address of the deceased if not resident within Stanton. They are thus invaluable to both genealogists and historians.

The early Rectors were required to forward copies of their register entries to the Bishop at Southwell. Many of these have survived in the Registry at Southwell. They consist of mere scraps of parchment with badly written dates, names and events and are extremely difficult to read. They partly fill the gap between 1627 when they start and 1736 when the first register commences.

Your editor has kindly been given permission by Mark Dorrington, Principal Archivist,  of the Nottinghamshire Archives and the Bishop of Southwell to copy and reproduce here both the Bishop's Transcripts and the Parish Registers of All Saints. Please see the active links below to examine the transcripts and registers. Data are only included up to 1904 to conserve privacy.
